He was under house arrest from September 2000 to August 2001.
He is a former NLD party treasurer and was also the deputy prime minister during the BSPP rule. He has been a spokesperson for the NLD since Aung Shwe, Tin Oo and Aung San Suu Kyi were placed under house arrest in September 2000.
He is head of the NLD Irrawaddy Division. On March 26, 1991 he became a Central Executive Committee member after Aung San Suu Kyi, Kyi Maung and Tin Oo were placed in detention.
He joined the NLD after the junta's coup in September 1988.
