For 17 years Irrawaddy has been working in exile to tell the true story of the violent struggle for democracy in our homeland Burma.

THE FACTS:

1988: Twenty three years ago, thousands of students were killed by the Burmese military SLORC in the 88 Democracy Uprising.

2003: Eight years ago, hundreds of citizens gathering peacefully were beaten, murdered, raped and jailed by SPDC supporters in the Depayin massacre.

2007: Three years ago: hundreds of monks, students, and citizens were murdered, beaten, disappeared or jailed by the SPDC military in the Saffron Uprising.

NOW: In Burma today the Myanmar government has jailed more than 2000 political prisoners, with 17 journalists locked in solitary confinement. The Burmese military Tatmadaw are arresting, torturing, raping and killing men, women and children in the Eastern States of Burma.
