1. Dr. Aung Khin Sint (Released)

Pen Name: Aung Khin Sint

Detained: (1996 - 2001)

A Burmese medical doctor, writer and senior member of the National League for Democracy, or NLD, who served part of a 20 year sentence for reportedly writing and distributing leaflets about the National Convention and having contact with “illegal associations.”

 

2. Aung Tun (Jailed)

Detained: (1988 -)

Aung Htun was arrested in February 1998 for writing a book documenting the history of the Burmese student movement. A writer and activist with the All Burma Federation of Student Unions, he was sentenced to a total of 17 years imprisonment.

 

3. Aung Myint (Jailed)

Pen Name: Phya Pon Ni Loan Oo

Detained: (2000-)

Former journalist for the magazines Cherry and Mahaythi, Aung Myintwas sentenced to twenty-one years imprisonment on December 20, 2000, for passing on NLD information to foreign press agencies and western embassies in Rangoon. He is incarcerated in Insein Prison.

 

4. Aung Pwint (Jailed)

Pen Name: Maung Aung Pwint

Detained: (1999 -)

Poet, video producer and media personality, Aung Pwint, was sentenced to eight years in prison in September 1999, for “illegal possession of a fax machine,” and for sending information to banned Burmese publications. He is currently held in Insein prison.

5. Aung Kyaw (Jailed)

Pen Name: Monywa Aung Shin

Detained: (2000 -)

Former editor of the magazine Sar-maw-khung (The Literary World), Monywa Aung Shin was arrested in September 2000, and sentenced to seven years in prison under the State Protection Law. His articles and poems were regularly published in magazines such as Guita Padath, Moe Wai and Sbei Phyu.

 

6. Chaw Chaw (Released)

Pen Name: Nyi Nyi Yin

Detained: (1997 - 2003)

Chaw Chaw was released from Insein prison in March 2003. She was arrested together with her husband in 1997 and sentenced to 10 years in prison under the Printers and Publishers Registration Act for illegal possession of books and newspapers.

 

7. Hla Htut Soe (Jailed)

Detained: (2002 -)

Hla Htut Soe is currently being held in Insein Prison.

 

8. Htay Thein (Released)

Pen Name: Naung Kyaw

Detained: (1989 – 2003)

Htay Thein, a university professor in Rangoon and the author of many political and philosophical articles, was arrested in June 1989 and sentenced to twenty years in prison for his presumed involvement with the Burmese Communist Party.
