Armed ethnic groups are preparing for war with Burmese government troops after learning that the junta will launch major military offensives in their control areas after the election, according to ethnic leaders.

“We have formed special forces to prepare for guerrilla war when they [regime troops] come,” said Bee Htoo, the army chief of the Karenni National Progressive Party (KNPP).

“It is not good to kill each other. But, the military will still rule the country after election,” said Bee Htoo.

In order to defend against major junta offensives, six armed ethnic groups have formed an alliance and agreed to help each other if a member is attacked.

The six armed ethnic groups include the Karen National Union (KNU), the Kachin Independence Organization, the New Mon State Party (NMSP), the KNPP, the Chin National Front and the United Wa State Army.

If the Burmese junta attacks one armed ethnic group, the other armed ethnic groups will launch attacks in their areas of the country, according to alliance leaders.

“We intend to set up different military front lines in the country when they [the junta] attack one of our members. That way they can’t reinforce their troops only at one place. They have to defend every corner from our attacks. This is how we will be better prepared to counter their offensives,” said Bee Htoo. “We got information that they will launch major attacks from Kachin State to Tenasserim Division.”

Burma will hold its national election on Nov. 7.

David Takapaw, the vice chairman of the KNU, said, “The election is just cosmetic. There will be no change after the election. We have to continue to attack them [the junta].”

The Mon cease-fire group, the New Mon State Party (NMSP), has ordered its troops to open fire against government troops if they enter any of their 12 control areas.

“Although we do not want to go war, we have no option because there are no rights for our ethnic people in the Constitution,” said Zay Ya, the chief of the Mon National Liberation Army, the armed wing of the NMSP.

Meanwhile, Thailand has increased border security because it fears any ethnic conflict before or after the election could lead to an increase in refugees seeking safety in Thailand, army officers told Agency France Presse.

Col. Padung Yingpaiboonsuk, a task force commander in the border province of Tak, told the AFP, “We have stepped up security checks along the border to prevent any forces or people fleeing from the other side and also to prevent people and weapons crossing the border from our side.”

He said the army would increase patrols along the border opposite Burma’s Karen State, where ethnic rebels continue to fight the government.

Some Karen sources have said that the regime will attack the Karen army on Oct. 20.

Nai Kao Rot, the former deputy army chief of the NMSP, told the Irrawaddy, “High-rank officers in Thai army came and asked me last month whether we will fight the SPDC because they have to secure the border.”

Ahead of the upcoming election, the regime has pressured armed ethnic groups to transform their armies into a border guard force under the control of Burmese officers.

In my guess, there can be more war, absolutely. I think you all already know what happened in Burma, including ethnic groups, what the SPDC do to them.
In my view, every ethnic group must fight the SPDC. If we do just only non-violence there can be difficulty to get freedom.
The SPDC killed monks, civilians, and students, then put them in jail.
So we need to unite every ethnic group If we unite, I think it won't be long to get freedom in burma.
thanks

If everyone can compromise, a deal can be made without any external influence. The most important thing is that there must be continued direct engagement and acceptance of the outcome with a practical approach.

And also, as a Burmese, I hate to hear Bamanization.

What the KIA wants is simply want to be a part of the Union Army instead of useless BGF,but the junta was silent. This demonstrates that this regime is racist and discriminates against other national races and wants to keep them as the second-class citizens worshiping the Bama Tatmadaw.

Bumanization must be terminated. Stand firm, fight the mad national criminals who jail the people's leader and destroy the country, enforcing artificial poverty on its own peoples. All should hold hands, unite and fight.

No one really has any idea to my question about why no Shan fighting group is in the alliance? I did also write to the Irrawaddy's editor, maybe everyone is no different from me. I really hope someone can help me!

Than shwe has visited rajapakse in Sri Lanka and may use tactics similar to those used against the LTTE (Tamil Tigers) in the Burmese State's renewed war against its ethnic minorities.

Upwards of 60,000 Tamils were killed in 2009, the Tamil people were then incarcerated and remain in captivity under military rule in their own homeland, while the rest of the first world including India and China look solely at the prospect of 'development'.

The various ethnic Liberation armies must know that, since the defeat of the one the best trained and armed insurgent forces in the world (LTTE), oppressive majoritarian state's (like Myanmar) have got the go-ahead from an acquiescent 'International Community' to up the stakes in the violence that the State will unleash on ethnic minority civilians in order to destroy resistance to the State's landgrab and genocidal project.

My thoughts are with the minorities, I pray they have the strength and unity to withstand the onslaught that will surely follow.

No one wants war or killing each other to happen. Everyone wants peace and freedom, but only Than Shwe and his men don't want this. They only want power and will get it by killing innocent people in Burma, specially in the ethnic areas where suffering is the worst.

Think about negotiation, not fighting. Do not let another generation to die for a bloody useless war. Democracy never be achieved without peaceful negotiation. Give and take will do definitely. Think wisely please.

Part 3 -
Of course Burma needs both China and the US. Currently, it is China that is feeding Burma in many ways. The same token goes for the government military power as well. Burma needs China’s support and it is getting it in many, many ways. More now than ever before! But why?

Wake up brothers; No one is going to win if you choose to fight. One might manage to kill its opponent on an occasion but what happens when an offensive is launched against you? If it is not the soldiers, unfortunately it is the innocent civilians that are going to foot the bill between all this cross fire.
Enough blood has shed.
It is not worth it.
I just pray that there will be love and peace in Burma. God Bless.

But hang on, tell me what is fair! Do you think the military hierarchy in all my ethnic brother armies are formed fairly? Is it really? I wouldn’t say so, brothers. In fact nothing is fair.

Analyse the following:
*China is growing very fast and it is very focused on commercialization to feed its population.
*Burma is the only back door into China and Oil and Gas is strategic for the nation’s livelihood.
*China can no longer rely on the risky Malacca straits and the pipeline from Russia.
The West and its friends are itching to seek any available excuse to settle any pending issues (trade deficit! Is one of them).
There is ample evidence that tension is on the rise between China and The West. Have a look at this as an example: http://sixtyminutes.ninemsn.com.au/stories/7955110/navy
The world is changing very fast. Try and see the bigger picture. China will maintain its strategic energy supply routes at all cost.
Remember we are all pawns in this power play!

Don't you guys want to live peacefully in harmony? My humble opinion is to have a better tolerance towards different races and live in harmony. Burman, Kachin, Shan, Wa, etc... Chinese, Indian, etc... Whoever chooses to live in Burma legally should consider themselves as brothers.

I am really worried for any soldier's family (Karen, Wa, kachin, Shan, Burman etc...) Their Kids, their parents, their wives and families are the ones that will be left behind if something happens to those soldiers. Sure! you guys are brave and think War is awesome! Who is going to care for them when you guys are dead?

Is there any benefit in fighting? I think it is time to move out from “Stone Age”. I am sorry to say this but there are no other words. It is the time to assimilate and develop the country together. Stand together as Brothers! The rest of the world is moving fast with commercialization and, somehow, we are going backwards.

Politics in Myanmar is very complicated. SSA (South) is reportedly funded by the RTA & CIA to counter the UWSA presence in southern Burma under cover of US DEA's anti-drug campaign. The Junta considered SSA (S) as proxy force of RTA. SSA (N) was an off-shoot of old BCP. SSA (N) can enter an alliance with KIA, UWSA.

KNU & SSA (S) are part of western pro-groups. That's why they hardly can co-operate each other. The masters are different. One is Chinese & the other is American. Among our neighbours, India is the best and did not interfere in our politics since independence. The rest are crooks. Even if you do not like the Junta, you must be careful when you enter politics & deal with those groups.

One of the greatest military tactics used by the colonizers was divide and rule. With only a few Spanish soldiers in our land (the Philippines) they were able to rule the whole archipelago for more than 300 years because they pitted our ethnic groups against each other. Our ancestors fought many battles and many died. It was only when 8 provinces united to fight that we were able to win (almost).

Burmese should unite under one leadership against military dictatorship. United, you stand; divided, you fall. With so many tribes and organizations fighting one common enemy in uncoordinated effort, each one group can be easier to wipe out, or you can be made to wipe out each other.

Unite, unite, unite.

As my political knowledge is limited, can anyone explain to me why there is no Shan fighting group in the alliance while we (Shan) have both cease-fire and non-ceasefired group? It seems this is the critical point, and I really wonder why the SSA is excluded. Thanks in advance to those who help!

Hi Mg Thomas,
You're incorrect. It should be a "Karen fight for British" and even they almost destroyed the whole country in 1950.

Your days are also numbered Mg Thomas. Don't stirr and let innocent people fight each other. If you dare to fight, you should go to the front line and face the SPDC. Do it yourself, do not sacrifice the lives of others.

I have written a book about the Karen fight for freedom ("War in Karen Country") and invite all of those who stand for the cause of freedom and against the military dictatorship (SPDC) to contact me. My email address is: [email protected]

I will send to all those contacting me, photos of the Karen National Liberation Army.

I don't think the junta will launch any sort of ethnic cleansing war against its own brethren. If it does, the only words for the armed ethnic groups to say are: "Give me liberty or give me death."

At the verge of the demand of democracy by the citizens of Burma and the international principle engagement for the transformation of Civil society in the country from the military dictatorship, the trend of reinterpretation of the war to be waged has to be the war
1. for the stability of federal union
2. against common enemy Military Dictatorship
3. against Militarization
4. against the burminization
5. against ethnic cleansing
6. for the implementation of human rights and civil empowerment
7. for justice, peace and equality in country.

Rather it is conditioned to be "the war between Federalists and anti-federalism, the Junta, not Burmese as Race on the basis of Panglong."
