Controversial Funding Shakes Pro-Democracy Alliance

“Our friends are funding us and none of it is black money.”
Aye Maung, chairman of the RNDP, also denied any relationship with Hla Maung Shwe, confirming the party had received no money and likening the journal's report to an attack on the RNDP.
Thein Htay of the UDP took an opposing stance, however, saying that all businesses in Burma were related to the military, “so if someone’s support is providing something positive for the people, we accept it.”
Hla Maung Shwe and Myanmar Egress’s other executive, Nay Win Maung, came to Bangkok, Thailand, in July for a meeting regarding the Burma election with European diplomats and donors, and received cooperation from the Chiang Mai-based Vahu Development Institute.
Using data supplied by Myanmar Egress, Nay Win Maung said 78 percent of Burmese voters would turn out on the election day and 85 percent of voters supported the junta’s 2008 constitution.
He said key political parties gave a mandate to the NGO to lobby for financial support of the election internationally, a policy considered controversial by political parties and Burmese intellectuals because of Nay Win Maung's close ties to the military due to his father's career as a former military officer and director of the Military Museum.
“We did not give any mandate to any organization or any person, though we participated in some of the training provided by Myanmar Egress,” said the SNDP's Sai Eik Paung.
The six parties met on Tuesday to resolve the issue and have reached some agreement but have not yet made an official announcement.

"Aung San Su Kyi was too idealistic in 1990".
Utter nonsense. Why wait till she reached the age of 43 to get involved in politics?
Schwebomin II rejected FargaungShuMaung and BSPP at the age of 13! He is an idealist.
SuuKyi is an interloper, opportunist, and usurper of her brother U AungSanOo. We will keep saying this until all Burma hears the truth. She thought she was so smart in calling Tatmataw "fascist."
Our beloved Bogyoke AungSan, who founded it, must be turning in his grave.

I don't know much about Myanmar Egress. But what is the reasoning behind all this hoo haa? Even if Myanmar Egress were formed by the Senior General himself, what would be wrong with using its money to defeat the USDP, the NUP and their affiliate parties as long as you don't become one?
As mentioned before, if you and your family are attacked by a group of robbers and someone or even one of the robbers hands you a gun, it would certainly be foolish to refuse it on the suspicion that it is coming from a thief!
Aung San Su Kyi was too idealistic in 1990 and thus was unable to deal with the military and still remains to be so. Now it looks as many are still unrealistic or day dreaming. Or are they deliberately raising all these hoo haa so that they can prolong the suffering of our people and gain something out of it as mingalaba suggested? Apologize to mingalaba if I'm quoting you wrongly. |

Dear Mingalabla, Do you mean Minglabar? The German duchess, aunt of Schwebomin II who went to Burma and upon her return greeted HM 'Minglabar'. The king thought it should be 'Minglasheparsay' according to HM's childhood upbringing. Could you tell us what is the correct form?
Only 4 parties? What about number of combinations of 2 out of 3? Factorial 3, 3! over factorial (3-2! ie 1!. So you have missed out 3x2x1=6 possibilities.
You are quite right about those blinded by their hatred of all things military - the anti-junta clique.
U Soethein's logic is also correct.
Minglabarsheparsey or Minglabar. |

3 burmese people meet, they form 4 groups. One group of 3, and 3 groups of 1.
This is a clear example of the business that is "being anti-Burma". International funds have been diverted to Egress and away from the anti-Burma campaign, and so a campaign against Egress is very apparent, devoid of fact and devoid of the pertinent fact that the government has marginalized Egress for providing training to the ethnic parties. |

The article says Nay Win Maung has "close ties to the military due to his father's career as a former military officer and director of the Military Museum" !!!! This is ridiculous.
Aung San Suu Kyi's father founded the military! Is that a "close tie"?! NLD Vice-Chair U Tin Oo is a former army commander-in-chief. Is that a "close tie"?! NLD former chairman U Aung Shwe was a former regional commander (when there were only two regional commanders). Is that "close tie"?
Also people make a lot of family relationships, denying children of regime officials visas etc. - when all Burmese people know that many Burmese families are often broken, with brothers/sisters/parents/children on different political sides. Look at Aung San Suu Kyi and Aung San Oo. There are many other examples. |
