The reason that Than Shwe can stay in power for long controlling the army is nothing special about him. It is all to do with the mentality and culture of the Burmese army. If you put a uniform on a monkey the Burmese officers will salute and obey that animal. After all, they won't be chosen and promoted as generals unless they are pretty thick!
