At the same time, it will be harder to drop its bid for the chairmanship this time, since it won't have the same face-saving excuses to rely on.

In other words, things are about to become very uncomfortable, for Asean and for Burma. But that is the price they will have to pay if they want to achieve their goal of moving forward.

Myanmar will get the Chairmanship of the ASEAN in 2014! The ASEAN does not have the balls to say 'no' if the Myanmar guys in Naypyitaw really want it, and they really want it, it will legitimize and demonstrate to the world that their government is true.

It is pretty clear and not rocket science: Political prisoners and army killings=no chairmanship.

Anything else is a joke at those (Asean members) who shake hands with the pretenders to reform.

It is not a matter of 'playing cards'. These are human lives a the hands of people who are not fairly elected OR responsible leaders: ie those without a genuine mandate.

Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa, was much less forthright and barely coherent saying, “Myanmar is obviously a work in process, in terms of democratization. To put it more—in a more—I guess—yes, I don't want to use, describe it as a work in progress.”
Looks like he is CHANGING HIS TUNE today!
These guys in ASEAN talked with FORKED TONGUES I noticed.
No need to get into CROSS FIRE to find out whether a war is ongoing in Burma at his level.
Of course he would be handed a pouch of GEMS - Jade, Rubies, Sapphires and Pearls - for his wife on his return from Burma.
And Thein Sein will host ASEAN in 2014.
However, the last Burma-Oman world cup qualifier match would give EXACT INDICATION of what to expect for ASEAN in Thein Sein ruled land in 2014, wait and see.
