A list of 1,400 party members had been sent to the commission as a requirement to be eligible to contest the election. That list was forwarded to the special branch police. Officers then appeared at the homes of selected party members asking for personal information and photographs.

In fact, the whole country is being intimidated by the USDP and the military government. Earlier this month, an article in one of the state-run newspapers warned that anyone who “disrupts” the upcoming elections could face up to 20 years imprisonment.

All of this is just the tip of iceberg. The huge disadvantage for all pro-democracy parties is that the ruling military regime, the Election Commission and the USDP are actually all one organism.

As the election approaches, the political parties of the democratic opposition, their members and the entire electorate will be subjected to more intimidation, harassment, threats, vote buying and dirty campaigning.

Everything will be even more screwed up than before.

NO hope, no hope, no hope.
Another dictator in civilian clothes will rule for at least two decades to come.
Than Shwe needs another bloody confrontation.

Oh! My! What an election !

No Hollywood movie director, even Steven Spielberg, could have engineered such a wicked & cunningly doctored election the world would ever seen since the birth of 'Democracy' & its related 'Elections'.

If ever a Noble Committee has such a category, nobody could have beaten Than Shwe in manipulating such a game plan.

It is very clear that the regime is stacking the cards. But nonetheless participating is still the better option. I admire people like Phyo Min Thein (although he has dropped out now), Khin Maung Shwe and U Thu Wai for trying to make the best of a difficult situation.

And I still trust the people of Burma to vote for a real opposition party. The regime can campaign what they want, there is still a big hate vote up for grabs for the opposition.

If the junta, to its own surprise, loses again, there are two possible scenarios. One is a scenario in which the parliament is allowed to gather and the opposition has more influence than before. The second scenario is that the junta will not aknowledge the outcome of the elections, like it did in 1990. In that case the opposition parties will have exposed the regime once again.

Either way the opposition has something to win and bystanders like the NLD - currently a hobby establishment for older people - can't count on my sympathy.

Yes, Than Shwe will do more dirty dozens if people allow him to do. He will stop doing crimes only when someone threatesn his life. We all must threaten him with one weapon. UNITY. One is going to stay a 3rd force wodering whether election could give me 330 seats. It is dream which will never come true under Than Shwe. Don`t be stupid. UNITED, Stand up and BE COUNTED FOR A BOYCOTT CAMPAIGN.
