John W Yettaw’s visit to the home of Aung San Suu Kyi was part of a Burmese opposition plot to intensify international pressure on the government, according to Burmese Foreign Minister Nyan Win.

The state-own daily newspaper The New Light of Myanmar reported on the fifth day of Suu Kyi’s trial on Friday that Nyan Win made the claim in a telephone conversation on Monday with his counterpart in Japan, Hirofumi Nakasone.

The report said Nyan Win believed the incident was probably "trumped up to intensify international pressure on Myanmar [Burma], by internal and external anti-government elements" at a time when the US, Japan and some European countries were reviewing their policies toward the military-ruled country.

Hirofumi told Nyan Win that his government was concerned about the legal action now being taken against Suu Kyi, saying it may impact international views on Burma as well as the general election in 2010.

Political observers are now asking whether the Burmese regime is trying to make up its own story, depicting Yettaw as a foreign spy for domestic and foreign opposition groups.

The Associated Press said that at Wednesday's hearing before the special court in Insein Prison, two black cloaks or robes described as being of a type worn by Muslim women, along with scarves to cover the face, two long skirts, and sunglasses, were presented as evidence.

Implying that they could be used in an escape attempt, the prosecutor asked the police officer who seized the items: "If a person wears this woman's Muslim dress and sunglasses, will you be able to identify the person?" The officer replied "No," the AP reported.

Yettaw also asked his lawyer to question a policeman who was testifying whether the officer had been told by Suu Kyi that he said to her, "In my vision, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi will be assassinated, so I came here." The lawyer asked permission to pose that question, but the court declined to allow it.

Meanwhile Burma’s Consul-General in Hong Kong, Ye Myint Aung, suggested in a letter posted on the consulate’s Web site that Yettaw could have been "a secret agent" or Suu Kyi’s "boyfriend."

Many Burmese political observers believe the bizarre case of the American intruder who managed to enter the highly restricted property of Suu Kyi was the work of Burmese regime and that security authorities were definitely involved.

Aung Lin Htut, a former military intelligence officer and deputy ambassador to the US who is currently living in Washington, told The Irrawaddy that it was unlikely that Yettaw simply outwitted security personnel by swimming to Suu Kyi’s lakeside home.

"There’s always tight security around Inya Lake," he said, pointing out that the area is also home to many other VIPs. "Without help from security personnel, there’s no way you could just swim across the lake."

One Burmese opposition blog site, www.niknayman-niknayman.co.cc, posted a video clip of an interview with a taxi driver in Rangoon, saying he drove Yettaw from Rangoon's airport and contending that the American in fact walked into Suu Kyi’s compound after he dropped him in front of Suu Kyi’s home.

According to the video clip, the taxi driver alleges that Yettaw walked into the compound after he showed a red card to the guards in front of the democracy leader’s house.

Yettaw, a Mormon, reportedly does not hold strong political views. He receives disability payments from the US Veteran’s Affairs office for Vietnam War-related injuries and has pursued studies in psychology.

I fully respect Daw Aung San Su Kyi for her dedication, but I would say she should be a bit paranoid about the call of the uninvited guest. I don't believe the guy could swim that far, and no point swimming that far anyway. It is a lesson for Burmese people not to think every American is the saviour for them and not every white person is superior.

Tide,

Your point to sideline Daw Suu from the political picture of Burma betrays the fact that you are just a regime apologist or proxy, no doubt.
And mentioning the regime, having absolute power, has the right to call the shots in Burma sounds defeatist, also.
You say the game is fair!
This evidences you have no sense of justice nor balance of mind also, I dare say.
Don't you know Than Shwe is bullying Daw Suu, a helpless and defenseless widow only while he, a grown man, is cowering behind 400,000 fully armed men?
Than Shwe's audacity to cook up and take advantage of this premeditated and cowardly plot holds all civilized men in awe and disgust, and hence there are outbursts and outrage worldwide today.
This is more than proof and no less than truth that Daw Suu is indispensable for Burma and our people's prosperity and posterity.
Hence, Than Shwe has no cause nor call to remain in the political picture of Burma, much less exist on this earth, I say.

Tide,

"Yet, our country can’t move on without the military as they have absolute power. But we can move on without Daw Suu."

No prizes for guessing where you're coming from. Homage in prostration to absolute power, perhaps on its payroll too like some of the others on this forum.

I can not believe how Ye Myint Aung became consul-General. His behaviour is so low.

I hope Ms Suu Kyi's lawyer will be focusing and emphasizing on the fact that since she is under "house arrest," her personal security as well as the environment surrounding her is the responsibility of the State. She has no way or means of protecting herself. The American's intrusion was made possible by the failure of security. Therefore, Ms Suu Kyi can sue the State for the breach of security.

Now then, the game is on. It's a fair game. Daw Suu is sarcastic. The military is rigid. They two deserve one another. The country needs to move on. People need not to dwell onto Suu Kyi's leadership whose judgment, even in this simple case of a foreigner's visit, is obviously very poor.

No one likes the military’s involvement in our politics. Yet, our country can’t move on without the military as they have absolute power. But we can move on without Daw Suu. We have been carrying her for the past 19 years. How many more years do we bear her stupid actions which may be as honest as she claims?

Don’t be stupid. No matter how her father/ mother/ husband/ son/ daughter swam across Inya Lake to meet her for any reason (maybe attack or giving sorrow), the causes belong to security failure. The punishment must go to them, not DASSK. She has to be free soon.

We are waiting for the day Daw Aung San Suu Kyi finishes her unjust house arrest ending this 27th May. Who would make such a stupid plot with only three weeks left to the end of her house arrest? I just want to know what kind of brain he has to become a "foreign minister"? (Or, no brain?)

"Burma’s Consul-General in Hong Kong, Ye Myint Aung, suggested in a letter posted on the consulate’s Web site that Yettaw could have been ‘a secret agent’ or Suu Kyi’s ‘boyfriend’.”

The first salvo of a character assassination attempt just as expected.

How come Nyan Win is so stupid? Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s home is the heaviest guarded place in Rangoon. This stupid American told the press before about his failed attempt to get inside Daw Suu’s compound and they simply ignored it. Now stupid Nyan Win said it is the idea of opposition side. It is very clear that all top ranking regime officers are very low educated and will say anything that their dumb leader Than Shwe asks them to say.

Crafty, crafty, crafty. Making a way out for SPDC if the outcome of the kangaroo court is not as expected.

Judges’ names please so that they can be blacklisted as well if they decide not to do the right thing.

Aung Lin Htut's view: "There’s always tight security around Inya Lake," and citing the area is also home to many other VIPs and saying, "Without help from security personnel, there’s no way you could just swim across the lake" is more credible than any other.

Yettaw is an unwitting partner in Than Shwe's conspiracy only. Hence, Nyan Win saying Yettaw’s visit is part of an opposition plot is no more credible than asserting the Earth is flat; rather more akin to saying Than Shwe is gay or he himself a coward going so low as to telling lies for his living and own survival.

No rational or right-minded individual would resort to hit a woman, much less below the belt like Than Shwe did lately and in view of all civilized world citizenry. Than Shwe's audacity and temerity in this matter is simply a joke though less entertaining.
No wonder Than Shwe is a stooge and a tool in China's aim for world hegemony. The world's future is simply bleak with China leading rogue regimes in Burma and elsewhere.

Why don't the Burmese regime ask Yettaw to swim in the Inya Lake again? Let's see if Yettaw really can swim or not.
