Sending a Message of Solidarity
DECEMBER, 2010 - VOL.18, NO.12

American artist Jim McNalis has made his celebrated sculptures of Burmese personalities more accessible by creating postcards of them. His fine portrayal of Aung San Suu Kyi appeared as a postcard to coincide with her release from house arrest. On the reverse of the card, McNalis writes: “Aung San Suu Kyi reminds us there is no such thing as neutrality; that if one person’s freedom is denied, the freedom of all people is in jeopardy. She reminds us that the battle for human rights and dignity is never over.”

McNalis’s message carries particular poignancy on another of his postcards, which portrays his sculpture of 88 Generation Students leader Min Ko Naing, who is serving a 65-year prison sentence for participating in demonstrations in August 2007. “Let us wish our brother well and assure him that his efforts are not in vain, that he is not alone in his fight for justice and freedom. True courage will prevail.”

McNalis’s postcards can be ordered by emailing him at [email protected].
