With the polls drawing near, the Burmese regime is completing construction of Naypyidaw’s new parliament building intended to house the new civil government

November 6 marks the fifth anniversary of the day that Burma’s military regime began relocating thousands of civil servants from Rangoon to the new capital of Naypyidaw. Sometime close to this anniversary date, Burma will hold its first elections in 20 years, and the junta is busy putting the finishing touches to Naypyidaw.

Although many buildings will soon celebrate their grand opening, Naypyidaw is unlikely to see a flood of new residents after the election. Most of the civil servants moving into the new administrative buildings will probably be familiar faces to Naypyidaw. The Union Solidarity and Development Association (USDA), whose membership includes most of Burma’s civil servants, has recently transferred all of its assets to the USDP, presumably including the brand new administrative headquarters in Naypyidaw.

Although the generals and senior officials may be happy with the insular security provided by their new home in Naypyidaw, there may not be many smiles on the faces of lower-level civil servants. Although the city–which the regime claims has a population of more than 900,000–boasts of modern buildings, broad boulevards and 24-hour electricity, most government workers have left their families behind in Rangoon due to the initial lack of essential services and the current lack of free-time activities in the new capital.

Photojournalist Myat Moe Maung recently toured Naypyidaw and captured the look of the seat of Burma’s new government.

It looks beyond anyone's imagination how mad this guy is for power. A replica or fake Shwedagon proves it all. Fake leader's fake plans will lead him to a fake victory where he would have heart attack with the fake pleasure of sadistic power.

Dictators around the world have done the same. These kinds of palaces are the reminders of their cruel rule in history. I believe that Than Shwe does not have a good night at all. Palaces and wealth never bring good life. The ghosts of his victims can enter into his palace and in his life every single moment. Than Shwe is the most haunted person and he is already scared to death.

This silly expensive insane 'white elephant' is for what... for Burmese military and their fattened wives and spoilt children to drive around in imported cars while the 'serfs' (the people of Burma) carry around fuel and refreshments barefoot?

What are you all planning to do, hide in the bunkers like Adolph?

Get a life, guys. Negotiate. The game is up.
Maybe Singapore will take you!

After an earthquake all will go to earth again. The checks on quality do not exist.

Yes, there’s no place like Naypyidaw for Than Shwe to enjoy his dream, unfortunately, his bad health does not allow him anymore for he is busy going up and down at Pun Hlaing International Hospital in Rangoon might make him very sick.

The capital of Burma will be moved to Yangon again. Naypyidaw will become Kyat Pye city, the museum of the mad dictator, it will soon be abandoned ghost town under the civilian rule and May become a tourist destination to witness the once mad rulers of Burma.

Ugh -- all these millions of dollars which could have gone to feed the poor -- on these prestige buildings which will be empty and house government servants as if they are slaves, which they are.

He loves fake replicas, so he has also designed a fake "election" and a fake "government."

God help us.
