On Sept 16, 1998, the National League for Democracy (NLD) formed the Committee Representing the People's Parliament (CRPP,) after the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) failed to respond to renewed calls to recognize the results of the 1990 elections. The committee was chaired by Aung Shwe and had ten positions. The committee was supported by 251 parliament members, including MPs from other parties. The CRPP annulled all laws promulgated since Sept 18, 1998 and called for the release of all political prisoners. Dr Saw Mra Aung, 83, chairman of the Arakan League for Democracy (ALD) and MP-elect from Arakan State, was elected as the People's Parliament president by CRPP. The SPDC immediately responded by arresting 110 NLD MPs and officials, including Dr Saw Mra Aung, who was detained from September 1998 to June 14, 2001. By the end of 1998, the SPDC had shut down 43 NLD offices, and has insisted on the dissolution of the CRPP as a pre-condition for the resumption of talks with the opposition. On Oct 23, 2002 the CRPP expanded its membership from 10 to 13 with new members representing three leaders from ethnic groups.

On April 24, 2000 he was arrested and sentenced to 21 years, but was released on Aug 16, 2002 because of his deteriorting health.

She became secretary of the CRPP after Aye Thar Aung was arrested. She was under house arrest from Sept 22, 2000 to May 6, 2002 for the second time. He was dismissed and imprisoned when authorities accused him of being involved in an attempted coup. Soe Myint (a) Thakhin Soe Myint	Aug 16, 1923	Member	NLD Member of Central Executive Committee, MP	South Okkalapa Township 1, Rangoon Division	He was the Secretary of Myaungmya Township, of the Dobama Asiayone (We Burmese Association) a pro-independence, anti-Japanese organization. He was the Regiment Commander of the BDA.
11.	Nai Tun Thein	Nov 30, 1917	Member	MNDF Chairperson, MP	Thanbyuzayat 2, Mon State	He represents the MNDF and was formerly its chairperson. He was detained for six years in the 1960s due to his political activities.
12.	Khun Htun Oo	1943	Member	SNLD Chairperson, MP	Hsipaw 1, Shan State	He represents the SNLD. He was an assistant to the Indonesian military attache from 1967 to 1977.
