Sunday, October 17—The New Light of Myanmar daily newspaper carried no coverage of Khin Nyunt’s Sunday activities. This does not necessarily mean he was detained on that day. Generally, when Khin Nyunt is traveling outside Rangoon, the dispatches do not make print until two or more days after the event.

Monday, October 18—There is no information about Khin Nyunt’s activities during the day. In the evening he returned to Rangoon.

According to one source, the Office of the Chief of Military Intelligence headquarters at eight-mile junction was raided at 18:00. It would seem most likely that Khin Nyunt would have been detained before the building was hit. As several sources asserted that he arrived in Rangoon at 20:00 or 20:30, and Mandalay is about a 45-minute flight from Rangoon—assuming our sources were correct on the timing—it is most likely that he was arrested while still in Mandalay

Tuesday, October 19—The following announcement is read out at 20:00 Radio Myanmar news: “The State Peace and Development Council [SPDC] has permitted Prime Minister Gen Khin Nyunt to retire on health grounds with effect from today.” It also announced that Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Soe Win was appointed PM in his place while Lt-Gen Thein Sein, up until then Secretary-2 of the SPDC, had been promoted to the vacant S-1 position. The order was signed by Sr-Gen Than Shwe, Chairman of the SPDC.
