Burmese Journalist Wins Major International Press Award
NOVEMBER, 2008 - VOLUME 16 NO.11

Aye Aye Win

A Burmese journalist who works for The Associated Press has received the 2008 Journalism and Courage Award from the International Women’s Media Foundation.

The journalist, Aye Aye Win, has worked as a reporter in Burma for nearly 20 years—a “risky business,” she said in a written acceptance speech. Only a free press could guarantee a free society, she said.

The award was accepted on her behalf by John Daniszewski, AP’s international managing editor. He said Aye Aye Win represented the best tradition of journalism—telling the truth and helping to keep people informed and enlightened.

Among those attending the award ceremony in New York last month was the city’s mayor, Michael Bloomberg.
