Rangoon asked the Thais to prevent Gen Wattanachai Chaimuanwong from holding a powerful post in the Royal Thai Army; asked the Thais to disband Special Task Force 399 based in Chiang Mai; and most recently, Rangoon asked Thailand to arrest Burmese dissidents living in Thailand.

At the army reshuffle in August, the Thai government appointed Gen Somdhat Attanand as the new army chief. Somdhat, who is close to Defense Minister Gen Chavalit Yongchaiyudh, said that he would accommodate the government’s policy.
