Thaung Tun (Jailed)

Pen Name: Nyein Thit

Detained: (1999 -)

Journalist and poet Thaung Tun, who worked for the magazine Padaut Pwint Thit and a Rangoon City magazine, was sentenced to eight years in prison for collecting information concerning human rights violations in Burma and sending it overseas. He is currently being held in Moulmein Prison.

 

29. Thaw Thaw Myo Han (Released)

Detained:

Thaw Thaw Myo Han, a student known for writing articles in support of democracy, published the University Literary Journal, under the auspices of the University Students' Literary Association, without authorization. It is suspected that he was arrested for being involved in organizing a pro-democracy demonstration.

 

30. Thein Tin (Deceased)

Pen Name: Tin Thein Maung

Detained: (1996 – 1998)

U Thein Tin, a writer and member of the Rangoon Township Organization Committee of NLD, died in detention at Rangoon General Hospital, February 18, 1998, following physical and mental torture in Insein Prison. He was charged under the State Protection Act.

 

31. Thein Tan (Jailed)

Detained: (1990 -)

Thein Tan was sentenced to ten years in prison and is currently being held in Thayet Prison. Owner of a bookstore in Mandalay, he wrote for the official publication Kyemon before working with several private magazines in the 1980s. He was convicted for writing an article about the killing of four people in Mandalay in August 1990.

 

32. Thet Zaw (Jailed)

Pen Name: Yesagyo

Detained: (1998 -)

Thet Zaw is currently being held in Thayet Prison – details unknown.

 

33. Thet Zaw (Jailed)

Pen Name: Zaw Thet Htway

Detained: (2003 -)

Zaw Thet Htway, editor of the sports journal, First Eleven, was sentenced to death on November 28, 2003, charged with the attempted assassination of junta leaders.

 

34. Tin Oo Lay (Jailed)

Pen Name: Tin Nyein Oo

Detained: (1996 -)

Tin Oo Lay is currently being held in Tharawaddy Prison – details unknown.

 

35. Win Tin (Jailed)

Detained: (1989 -)

Former editor of the newspaper Hanthawathi and author of many articles against the regime and close advisor to Aung San Suu Kyi, Win Tin has been successively sentenced on three occasions amounting to a combined twenty-year prison sentence. Charges against him include secretly publishing anti-governmental propaganda while in prison. He is being held in Insein Prison.

 

36. Yan Aung Soe (Released)

Pen Name: Thurein Htet Linn

Detained: (1998 – 2001)

Yan Aung Soe was sentenced to 59 years in prison for being “in contact with foreign organizations.” Known for his articles on education and in private magazines such as Thought and Your Life, he is currently held in Myaungmya Prison.
