Recently, however, The Myanmar Times came precariously close to acknowledging the plight of journalists who don’t know how to keep their heads down when it counts. In its Dec 3-9, 2001 issue, it carried an AFP report on press freedom that contained a statement from the Paris-based World Association of Newspapers claiming there are 18 jailed journalists in Burma (exiled Burmese rights groups estimate that the figure is even higher). Ironically, if any other Burmese publication had reported this information, its editor would almost certainly have joined the ranks of Burma’s imprisoned journalists. So what drives Dunkley to take the modest chances that he has in airing some of the junta’s dirty laundry? Publicly, he has stated his belief that his approach may lead to greater openness in the long run. But privately, one of his employees has offered another explanation: "Since we can write stories other journals can’t touch, our circulation has increased more and more. So to be outspoken is good for business."
