The Burmese expression, "hsinpyudaw hmipi kyan masote ba ne" ("don’t use a white elephant to take sugar cane") admonishes against using symbols of merit to pursue selfish goals. Thus, in the language of popular common sense, the belief of rulers that they can exploit auspicious symbols for their own purposes is neatly refuted.
