Analysts say that if the regime had struck even a week or two later, their hold over the army might have crumbled completely. In the event, they succeeded in crushing the "enemies of the people," and Sai Win Kyaw and Min Mone were arrested, tortured and given prison sentences of 12 to 20 years. But both men, now exiles, say that they still believe the choice they made a dozen years ago was the right one.
