After third-country resettlement, this is the only viable option remaining as it is difficult to envision refugee repatriation to Burma in the near future.

The time has arrived for all of those responsible and concerned for the wellbeing of uprooted Burmese to take a cold hard look at the tragedy of the past 25 years.  It is time for change.  We must think innovatively, resolve not to let the status quo remain and, ultimately, ensure that the lives of these refugees can be pursued in dignity and freedom.

Arthur B. Carlson is the International Rescue Committee’s country director in Thailand.
