The journalist, Aye Aye Win, has worked as a reporter in Burma for nearly 20 years—a “risky business,” she said in a written acceptance speech. Only a free press could guarantee a free society, she said.
The award was accepted on her behalf by John Daniszewski, AP’s international managing editor. He said Aye Aye Win represented the best tradition of journalism—telling the truth and helping to keep people informed and enlightened.
Among those attending the award ceremony in New York last month was the city’s mayor, Michael Bloomberg.
